Celebrating Black History Month in Peterborough

Black History Month (BHM) is an opportunity for all Canadians to acknowledge the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians to Canadian history and society at large.

In December of 1995, the OBHS (Ontario Black History Society), under the leadership of president Rosemary Sadlier, successfully lobbied the federal government to have February declared as Black History Month. This year, Peterborough, for the first time in its history, will publicly recognize Black History Month with mayor Diane Therrien making a proclamation on Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel United Church, (formerly George Street United Church), in the Sanctuary.
