City hosts delegation from Italian city rocked by asbestos

Victims from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean were reminded Monday they are not alone in the battle against occupational hazards as Peterborough hosted a delegation from a small Italian city rocked by asbestos.

The group of six from Casale Monferrato shared their knowledge about asbestos exposure, including medical innovations, educational programs, environmental programs and community efforts at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52 hall.

Thousands of Casale residents have died from mesothelioma — a fatal disease caused by breathing asbestos — caused by the Eternit cement factory that closed in 1988. The city banned the substance 27 years before Canada, in 1992.
